Surprising city of Rotterdam (part 1)

17/1/2015

We still had these train vouchers which were due shortly. On a sunny and cold Saturday we decided to take the train and explore the city of Rotterdam.

Rotterdam is also famous for its cubic houses built by architect Piet Blom in 1984.

During the early stages of World War II the center of Rotterdam was bombed by the Germans, destroying many of the older buildings in the center of the city. After initial crisis re-construction the center of Rotterdam has become the site of ambitious new architecture (source Wikipedia).

There are not many pre-war buildigs left in the city center. The City Hall is one of them.

One of the latest architectural masterpieces is the new indoor markethall.

A lively market hall which is bursting at the seams with fresh fish, warm bread, tender meat, countless different cheeses and freshly harvested vegetables.
The first indoor market in the Netherlands opened its doors in Rotterdam in October 2014.

Escalators will take you straight from the market hall to the car parking in the basement.
The inside of the arched hall is the canvas of an impressive 11,000 m2 piece of art. The artwork is by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam and consists of larger-than-life images of fresh produce which will be sold in the Markthal.
