Nestled in the Palace Park is Oude Loo Castle. Since the 1970s the state has leased it to the queen, to use as a country retreat, thereby continuing a tradition of Oude Loo Castle being used by the House of Orange-Nassau. Oude Loo Castle is a moated 15th century hunting lodge. It was bought in 1684 by Stadholder William III (later, King of England). The castle is not open to the public, but the gardens that surround it can be visited in the period April 1st - June 1st, the months when the rhododendrons and azaleas are in bloom. In the gardens you'll also find the Statue Pond, an outdoor bowling alley and a maze. Click here or here to open a site with more information about Het Oude Loo.
